How To Setup Alexa Routines For Skills

You can setup a routine with Alexa which allows a skill to automatically start when something happens.  You can, for example, have Burglar Deterrent: Routines Edition start when your smart security camera detects motion, or at certain times of day.  


  • First ensure that the skill you wish to use with a routine is already enabled (find it on the Alexa Skill Store and click the Enable button)
  • Open up the Amazon Alexa App on your phone
  • Press the top left menu button
  • Choose "Routines"
  • Add a new routine by pressing the + button on the top right
  • Next to "When this happens" press the + button
  • You should now choose either "Schedule" (to start the routine at a specific time on specific days), or "Device" (to start the routine when motion is detected on a camera for example)
  • Once you have selected the times, or devices, you wish to start the routine, press the + button next to "Add action"
  • Choose "Skills", then "Your Skills", and then select the Skill you wish the routine to start for you, then press Next.
  • Now choose the Alexa device you wish the skill to play on, by selecting "Choose Device" in the FROM section.
  • Click Save.
